The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued a stream advisory for the Kansas River along the area between Wamego and Belvue in Pottawatomie County.

A potential for elevated bacteria and contaminants exists along that stretch of the river.

The stream advisory is a result of chronic problems with elevated bacteria in Wamego wastewater.

If you live near or have activities along the stretch of river, particularly by the north bank, do not go into the water or allow children or pets to do so, KDHE warns.

The city is working to repair the equipment.

KDHE will remove the advisory once water samples show no health risk and water contact has been deemed safe.
