Stormont Vail welcomes first New Year's baby of the decade in Topeka
Topeka's first baby of the new decade arrived early Wednesday morning at Stormont Vail Health Center.
When Annette Schindler and Kerrick Jones found out they were going to be parents, they were excited! But, when they realized the due date could be New Year's Day, they wanted their baby girl's birthday to have a special meaning.
"Once we knew she was going to be born around this time, our plan was to have her be the New Year's baby," said Schindler.
After talking to her doctor, Schindler put that plan into motion.
At 2:28 New Year's morning, Alita Jones was welcomed into this world making her the first baby born in Topeka in 2020.
Schindler said, "It's exciting, it's popping bottles of a new kind!"
To mark the special occasion, Stormont Vail gifted the newborn a hand-made hat donated by a staff member's mother that said "New for 2020."
"They were awesome staff, awesome nurses. They care about you," Schindler said.
The first-time parents said they never imagined the impact this moment would have.
"It is a life-changing thing that happened. Never expected it to go the way that it did and to feel the way that I did. It's amazing," said Jones.
Schindler added, "It's just been a really long journey and now we have a new year, a new baby, and a new decade."
As they make their New Year's resolutions, the couple has just one goal.
"Give her everything. Give her the best shot she can have. She's wonderful," said Jones.
While they may not know what the future holds, they are sure about one thing.
"She's going to love her birthday," Schindler said.
Baby Alita was the first born in Topeka, but not the last.
So far, Stormont Vail said they have had a total of seven New Year's babies born.
Saint Francis in Topeka has also had four babies born.
The first was Bowen Barber arriving at 7 a.m. He weighs 8 pounds, 2 ounces and is twenty and a half inches long.
Bowen is the third child for parents Jericka and Aaron, joining a big brother and sister.
