ST. MARYS, Kan. (WIBW) -- The Sugar Creek Country Store in St. Marys is home to a bulk grocery store and a New York style deli. But Dan Hohman, the owner, said it’s more than that.
"It’s not just getting a sandwich, it’s not just picking up some things that are on the shelf,” Dan said. “It’s an experience coming to a building where the history is still alive here. The design here is very similar to a general store of the early 1900’s."
Dan and his wife own and operate the Sugar Creek Country Store. With 10 children, they are not short of employees.
"I love my job and I love getting to know the customers,” Philomena Hohman, daughter and employee, said. “My dad’s always told us since the beginning to remember the customers’ names and always greet them with a smile and everything, and that’s what keeps them coming back."
Dan said they have customers from all over Kansas and as far as Kansas City and Wichita.
"It’s a good day trip to see the history here and have a sandwich in the middle of the day,” Dan said. “With the quality we get, it keeps the people coming back. We use the best quality ingredients, we have the customer service that we treat you just like family when you come in.”
The store's suppliers are Amish from various parts of the U.S. Dan said they don't use preservatives which makes the food taste better. The tasty signature sandwiches and friendly service keep customers coming back.
"I think the main thing is the customer service,” Henry Hohman, son and employee, said. “How we treat them consistently on a daily basis and the quality of the food is amazing."
