Son arrested in Beloit woman's 2003 murder

BELOIT, Kan. (KWCH) -- The Johnson County Sheriff's Office arrested a former Beloit man on Monday in the 2003 death of his mother.

According to the Mitchell County Communications Center, Charles Ray Fleming, 46, was arrested on a charge of first-degree murder for the death of Carol Fleming on August 16, 2003, in Beloit.

The agency says Charles is being transported to Mitchell County by Beloit Police Chief Dave Elam and Mitchell County Sheriff Tony Perez.

A first appearance will be scheduled once he is booked and processed in Mitchell County.

Kansas Missing and Unsolved Homicide reports, on the night Carol Fleming was shot and killed in her sleep, her son, Charles, or Chuck, said that he had parked his truck in the garage and "was in the process of feeding the dog when the cops showed up."

"At this time the family is processing and staying strong to what the future holds for solving my aunts (sic) Carol Fleming's murder," said a family member on Monday.

The Mitchell County Sheriff's Department and Beloit Police Department continue to work on this joint investigation.
