TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Shawnee County has a new undersheriff. 25 year Shawnee County Sheriff veteran Jay Simecka was sworn in as undersheriff Friday morning at the sheriff office.

For the past 4 years he’s served as the daily operations major, and the SWAT Team officer in charge.

Simecka also has a distinguished military record, serving 8 years with the marines and as a major with the Kansas Army National Guard.

Sheriff Brian Hill says he will be a big part of his plans for the office.

“We talked and kinda had the same vision for the sheriff office, and I needed him on the policing tactical operational side. He’s done a tremendous job,” Hill said.

“Enhance the budget to add more staffing. We can get more people out there on the streets doing some of these things. Our recruiting efforts are very widespread,” Simecka explained.

Simecka has a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Washburn University and a Master’s degree in Education from University of Saint Mary.
