Shawnee Heights High School excited for new turf football field
A local high school football field is getting an upgrade, and that includes new turf.
Crews were at Shawnee Heights High School Friday, putting the new turf field down.
The field was originally made for Friends University, which has the same school colors as Shawnee Heights. The college changed their minds and did not install the turf, so the makers of the field, Kansas Turf, offered it to the high school for a discount.
The high school said their natural grass turf prevented them from doing a lot of activities.
"The number of hours we can now put kids out here, P.E. classes, marching band, middle school football, high school football," said Cody Whitney, the Assistant Principal and Athletic Director of Shawnee Heights High School. "Our soccer facility is great with the county, but if they need to come home, we can put them out here to use it without having to worry about really having a problem with the grass."
The turf is expected to be done in two weeks, just in time for the school's varsity jamboree with Seaman, Highland Park, and Washburn Rural high schools.
