Shawnee County Sheriff issued Code Red alert for mail thefts, vehicle burglaries
The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to stay on alert or risk becoming a victim of theft.
The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office has issued a county wide Code Red alert. Shawnee County Sheriff Herman Jones says his office has seen an increase in mail thefts, vehicle burglaries and vehicle thefts in all parts of the county.
Jones say criminals will follow mail carriers and remove mail from mailboxes in an attempt to gather personal or financial information that can be used to steal your identity. Jones asks that residents collect your mail or packages as soon as they are delivered. Also to monitor your packages by utilizing the tracking number and make plans to have the package secured upon delivery.
Thieves are also targeting unlocked cars. Jones say to always keep your vehicle locked, remove any loose items in the vehicle such as electronics, U.S. currency, purses, backpacks, firearms, garage door openers, keys and other miscellaneous items.
Burglars may find any excuse to get on your property; including saying they are lost or looking for someone else. The Sheriff’s Office asks that if this happens to you to immediately contact law enforcement and is possible provide details such as a subject descriptions, vehicle description and tag number if possible.
