TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Documents obtained from the Shawnee County Election office show Congressman Steve Watkins used an address of a UPS store instead of a home address when voting in the 2019 general election.
The address, 6021 SW 29th St. in Topeka, is the same address as a UPS store. It was transmitted to the Shawnee County Election office as Watkins’ physical address when it comes to his voter registration.
An advanced ballot request made by Watkins also lists the SW 29th St. address, but asked the ballot be sent to an address in Washington D.C.
In a written statement from Watkins’ office, a spokesperson said, “Steve listed his mailing address instead of his physical address. He lives at the Overlook Apartments off Wanamaker in Topeka. This was inadvertent and both addresses are in the same county and same congressional district, so there was no improper purpose. The paperwork is being corrected."
According to the Shawnee Co. Election Districts, the two addresses and covered by two different City Council Districts.
Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab’s office says they are not looking into the matter at this time.
“Local authorities have first jurisdiction in this matter,” said Katie Koupal, spokesperson for the Kansas Secretary of State.
Shawnee County Election Commissioner Andrew Howell says it’s up to prosecutors and courts to look at the facts to determine if there was any wrongdoing.
13 NEWS has reached out to Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay, U.S. Attorney for Kansas, Stephen McAllister’s office and the Kansas Attorney General’s Office, asking if they are investigating.
“I have requested that local law enforcement investigate the matter. In this instance, I have contacted the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office,” said DA Mike Kagay. “Once their investigation is complete, law enforcement will forward the results to my office for review.”
The AG’s office directed all questions to the Secretary of State's Office. McAllister’s office said they are aware, but can not confirm or deny a federal investigation.
