Nick Reems has been a pet owner all his life and is always making sure he is feeding his animals the best quality of food which he says includes Science Diet.

“With the Science Diet, they have all the different gastrointestinal, specific prescription diets, as well as regular puppy and adult formulas," Reams said. "It helps with cleaning up the yard because they digest better rather than giving them junk food."

However, Reems' preferred pet food, Science Diet is disappearing off the shelves from Topeka's and Lawrence's PetsMart store and now PetCo. News that has him and other pet owners confused.

“It’s a very well known brand it's sold at almost all vet clinics, at least in the state of Kansas, if not around the country so it’s funny to me that local stores won’t sell Science Diet," Reams said.

13 NEWS reached out to Hills Pet Nutrition who distributes Science Diet for a comment and said the following:

"Petco has chosen to remove Science Diet and Ideal Balance products from their stores in Topeka and Lawrence, Kansas due to a business issue that we are working diligently to resolve with this valued retail partner. In the meantime, Pet Parents can find Science Diet and Ideal Balance products at other local pet retail stores, veterinary clinics and online outlets."

However to some customers this isn't enough.

“I just can’t believe they pulled it off the shelves and they didn’t announce anything or say why they are doing it," pet owner Matt Garren said. "I am just shocked.”

13 NEWS has learned that Orscheln,Tractor Supply, PetLand at West Ridge Mall, and other area veterinarians have Hills Science Diet in stock.

Petco did tell 13 NEWS that customers may register at the store to have Science Diet delivered to their homes.

“It's bad for local business. It’s going to encourage people to shop online and get there somewhere else," Garren said.
