Prepare to pump the brakes along SE 29th while construction continues

SHAWNEE CO., Kan. (WIBW) -- You'll need to pump the brakes along SE 29th St., near Lake Shawnee, while construction continues.

SNCO Commissioners approved temporarily changing the speed limit from 40 MPH to 30 MPH on SE 29th street from I470/KTA Bridge to SE Wittenberg Rd.

Right now, you can't get across Deer Creek because the bridge, near the Lake Shawnee spillway, is officially torn down. Crews hope to replace it and reopen 29th to one lane in each direction by May.

However, the new speed limit will be in place Feb. 25 through Dec. 6, 2019.

Public Works Dir. Curt Niehaus says it's to ensure the safety of motorist and construction crews.

"Here in late February we're going to start doing some additional work along the north side of 29th St.," Niehaus said, "and for the safety of the public we would like to lower the speed limit."

Phase two, to widen SE 29th, will finish by the end of 2020.
