EMPORIA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Heavy storms Wednesday morning gave Emporia High School students an unexpected day off.

Class was canceled at the high school after overnight rains knocked out its electricity, according to the district. All other USD 253 schools, however, still had power and school went on as usual.

While most of the high school staff did not need to show up either, the district did want the custodial staff to come in to work.

In addition to Emporia High, Flint Hills Technical College also canceled classes Wednesday because of power outages.

As of Wednesday morning, neither USD 253 nor the college have indicated they plan to remain closed Thursday.
