Pott. Co. Sheriff to fill vacant commission seat

The Pottawatomie County Sheriff will be turning in his badge earlier than expected after he was selected to serve in a different role Thursday night.

According to 1350 KMAN, the Pottawatomie County Republican Party selected current Sheriff Greg Riat to fill an upcoming vacancy on their county commission.

Riat will succeed Commissioner Travis Altenhofen, when he steps down early next year.

Riat's first day as a commissioner will be January 10th.

Sheriff Riat had earlier announced he would be retiring as sheriff at the end of 2020. He will resign that position before taking the oath of office for commissioner.

Riat was one of four candidates vying for the commission's upcoming vacancy.

He has served as Pottawatomie County Sheriff for 19 years.
