Portion of Kansas Turnpike reopened after flooding

SUMNER COUNTY, Kan. (KWCH) The Kansas Turnpike Authority says one lane of southbound I-35 has been reopened. All northbound lanes remain closed.

Widespread heavy rainfall caused serious traffic headaches on the Kansas Turnpike.

The flooded Slate Creek has washed over Interstate 35 (the Turnpike) forcing it to shut down both directions between Wellington and Blackwell, Okla. Into Wednesday afternoon, water washed out concrete barriers. Crews already are on standby to repair the road.

The Kansas Turnpike Authority says it doesn't have a timeline on when the highway will reopen, but floodwaters are beginning to recede.
