TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Hundreds of area students got a lesson in their favorite food Tuesday - pizza.
Shawnee Co. Research and Extension and Farm Bureau hosted their annual 'From Farm to You' event at the Expocentre's Livestock Pavilion.
Students learned what has to happen to get the food we eat on store shelves. Various stations explained how soil and weather conditions impact foods, like pizza.
Organizers say it's important for kids to understand food just doesn't come from the grocery store.
"Over at the swine station, one of the questions we ask is 'Where does the ham come from?' And then when we point at the rear end of a pig the kids go crazy because they really just have no idea," said Candis Meerpeohl, the 4H Youth Development Director for Shawnee County.
To complete the experience, each student enjoyed a slice of Cici's pizza.
