TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Topeka Police are questioning the driver they believe ran over and killed a man in a field near a North Topeka walking trail.
People heard an argument just after 1 p.m. Monday and called authorities, Lt. Manny Munoz said. He said people then saw a vehicle run over a person, and take off on Topeka Blvd.
Upon arrival, the officers located an adult male victim suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, where he died. The victim's identity is being withheld until his family has been notified of his death.
Munoz said the officers found the vehicle a short time later near SW Emland Dr. and SW Gage Blvd. He said the driver was taken to the Law Enforcement Center for questioning.
The area where it happened was near the Soldier Trail, in the 1500 block of NW Tyler. Munoz said the people were not on the paved walking path itself, but rather in an area some people have used to make their own way between the trail and local streets and alleys, both on foot and by car or bicycle.
"It was good that the person that called in actually gave us the address," Munoz said, "and then they were able to stay here and direct officers to where it actually had occurred."
Munoz said police also were questioning several witnesses.
He said it is not known what the people involved were arguing about.
