TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Payless Shoe Source will cut twenty more positions in Topeka, but the company adds many of them may not be going anywhere.
A spokesperson for the discount shoe retailer, Meghan Spreer, told 13 NEWS the layoffs are an expansion of a previously announced deal with the global business and IT services company Cognizant to let them handle many of the IT responsibilities, including its Retail Support Desk.
Now, Cognizant will take on the duties of the Customer Service Center (CSC) team, she explained.
Spreer went on to say many of the current CSC employees will be offered positions with Cognizant - and their job responsibilities will barely change. They expect the process to take about four to six weeks.
In addition to cutting costs for Payless, Spreer said Cognizant will provide "tools and methodologies" to improve its service and adapt to changing technologies.
Payless has about 750 workers at its Topeka world headquarters. They laid off 110 employees in January, and a short time later eliminated more than 20 IT positions.
