TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - It was a bittersweet morning as the director of a Shawnee County organization said his goodbyes and thanked the public.
Commissioners gave a standing ovation to Tom Vlach, the outgoing Public Works director.
Commissioners voted unanimously to acknowledge they received Vlach's resignation, who is leaving for a job in Des Moines, Iowa, to be closer to his family. He said it's hard to leave a job you love so much.
"This organization is so well run and the commission allows us to do our jobs," Vlach said. "That's why it runs like it does. You have trust and faith in your staff, which I believe is the way to go. I think it gives us the confidence to make decisions to get things done in a timely manner."
Tom Flanagan will be named interim Public Works Director while the county searches for a permanent director.
