KHP releases name of Oskaloosa man killed in Jefferson Co. wreck
An 81-year-old Oskaloosa man was killed Friday afternoon in a head-on collision in Jefferson Co., the Kansas Highway Patrol says.
Investigators say Lee Crum was heading north on Hwy. 59 near 62nd Street, south of Oskaloosa, shortly after 2:30 p.m. when the driver of an oncoming Ford F-150 lost control and crossed into the northbound lanes.
Crum's Kia Optima crashed into the passenger side of the truck and went into the ditch. The Ford, driven by Nicholas Caudle, 20, of Atchison rolled onto its passenger side, then fell back onto its wheels.
Crum died at the scene. His passenger, 74-year-old Janet Crum, was injured in the crash and taken to a Topeka hospital. Caudle and his passenger, Dongchen Chen, 20, of Lawrence, were believed to have suffered serious injuries as well, and also were taken to the hospital.
Jefferson Co. Sheriff Jeff Herrig says roads in the area were wet at the time of the crash, and rain was changing over to snow. He says it is possible slick roads were a factor in the wreck.
Highway 59 was closed between 54th and 62nd streets until just after 5:30 p.m. while authorities investigated and crews cleared up the wreckage.
