TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Dollar General held a grand opening Saturday in the Oakland neighborhood.
They are known for low prices and offering everyday essential items. That's why when Oakland residents saw a store open in their area, they were excited.
Tish Alcala grew up in the neighborhood and moved back several years ago. She said, "It's nice. It's convenient to have them in our backyard."
Resident Karen Barker agreed saying, "It's very convenient."
Erich Glave also moved to the area several years ago. He said, "It's walking distance from my house, I've walked here twice this week."
Mike's Market, a long-time grocery store in the neighborhood, closed last year forcing residents to travel much farther for their items.
Alcala said, "The convenience of not having to drive over the bridge, or go east, or go southeast and what have you, it's kinda nice to just stop and pick up what you need and move on."
"It's a good little drive up to North Topeka or all the way down to Wanamaker or something and it takes quite a bit of time, so having this here will really help out," said Glave.
To celebrate the grand opening, Dollar General was giving away $10 gift cards and a tote bag with product samples. Residents also got a coupon in the mail.
"I wanted to take advantage of the coupon and I saved $5 which sounds crazy, but I got my things that I needed," said Alcala.
Barker said, "My income is just basically for me and it makes it a lot more simpler to have the prices that I can afford."
Residents said the new store brings peace of mind back to their neighborhood.
"I'm just really glad to see a good company come in and a good tenant here in Oakland," said Glave, "Makes us feel good that we moved in to Oakland."
The new store is located at 2620 NE Sardou Ave. It's open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day.
