TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - New technology is thwarting thieves from stealing copper at a local park.
Technicians were at Dornwood Park Wednesday afternoon, installing a Light Guard Pulse monitoring system. The system detects interruptions in the power supply to the parks lights and sends immediate alerts to the system operators, who can quickly send police officers to the park.
This comes after thieves stole copper wiring from lights and scoreboards earlier this year.
"This place is no longer gonna be a viable place for easy copper theft," said Scott Wilkinson, a product specialist for Elecsys Corporation, who makes the technology. "It's gonna be monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week so the chances of them being able to get it successfully is going way down."
The system was approved by Shawnee County Commissioners in the summer.
