TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-- An North Topeka park is welcoming new upgrades this summer.
Shawnee Co. Parks and Recreation says improvements to McKinley Park, located on 943 NW Western, were made after 20 years.
Park renovations included removing non-compliant playground equipment, then installing new mulch, games and tables.
Mike McLaughlin says a grant secured by the North Topeka West Neighborhood Improvement Association helped make the upgrades possible. The organization's president, Teresa Miller spearheaded much of the project.
"Teresa worked for years through city and county governments, and a sometimes arduous grant process to get these improvements brought to fruition," he said.
McLaughlin says the organization also purchased land west of McKinley Park that was previously inhabited by a homeless camp to expand the space. The renovations to McKinley Park are set to be complete June 18th.
