TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Rainy conditions might have pushed the Topeka Golf Association's City Match Play Championship finals back a day, but on Monday, the sun shone through and found a new champion in Mac McFarland.
McFarland parred No. 15 at Cyprus Ridge Golf Course to notch a 5 & 3 win over Scot Duddy, completing his first win in the match play event. He had participated in the championship each year since 2000.
"I got in a zone that I don't ever want to get out of," McFarland said. "It was pretty fun playing all weekend. (I) didn't make a lot of mistakes, kept the ball on the fairway, hit greens and made putts."
McFarland won the City Stroke Play Championship in 2017 and has also won in TGA's two-man and four-man events before, several of which were also held at least in part at Cyprus Ridge.
"I grew up on this course so I kind of know the ins and outs of everything on this course," McFarland said. "To get this here, it means a lot.
"I've got a 2-year old boy at home and he's going to be happy his dad won."
McFarland also added his son already loves the course, and that he's looking forward to watching him grow up on the same course as his father.
