The Manhattan Fire Dept. is working to determine what sparked a Friday afternoon fire at a duplex, a few blocks east of Kansas State University.

According to the fire department, firefighters responded around 12:44 p.m. to the 900 block of Thurston Street and could see light smoke coming from the one-story home as they arrived.

Crews tracked the source of the fire to the kitchen and found it was nearly out. They then ventilated the rest of the home to make sure the flames didn't spread.

No one was home at the time and the fire department believes the house is vacant.
