Man suffers life-threatening injuries in southeast Topeka shooting

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- A late-afternoon shooting in southeast Topeka sent one man to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

According to the Topeka Police Dept., its officers were in the area near the 800 block of SE Rice Rd. around 4:20 p.m. when they heard gunfire.

About five minutes later, they spotted a vehicle stopped at the I-70 and Rice Rd. interchange and found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound.

TPD officers, as well as members of the Shawnee Co. Sheriff's Office and Kansas Highway Patrol, are still on the scene and are asking people to avoid the area while they investigate.

No one is in custody at this time in connection with the shooting.
