Man sentenced to nearly 49 years in death of 2-year-old Wichita boy
A man who last month pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend's 2-year-old son, heard his fate Tuesday in Sedgwick County District Court.
A judge sentenced 26-year-old Lucas Diel to 586 months in prison, or nearly 49 years. Tony Bunn's mother, Elizabeth Woolheater also faces charges in the boy's death last May.
Police say officers were called to a home last May where Tony was found with injuries to his head and face. He was not breathing. He died days later in the hospital. At that time, police say the 2-year-old was in the care of Woolheater and Diel.
In Sedgwick County District Court Tuesday, a woman read a letter from Bunn's family in California and someone from the Woolheater family read a letter from Tony's grandparents.
Tony Bunn's godmother spoke about her experience watching Tony and the effect his death had on her family, especially her children.
Diel addressed the court, issuing an apology and saying he takes full responsibility for what happened.
Elizabeth Woolheater is awaiting trial, scheduled to start in September.
