Lawrence Journal World, TOPEKA (WIBW)--- A Lawrence man will spend 17 years in prison for a standoff and shooting.

The Lawrence Journal World reports Abdul Hussein was sentenced Monday for attempted murder and aggravated burglary.

Prosecutors say Hussein battered an officer before going inside his home last June. Then came back out wearing body armor and pointed a gun at the officer.

The two men exchanged fire, but neither was hit.

The Lawrence Journal World reports Hussein's mother told the judge the family sought assistance for Hussein's struggles with mental illness, but no one helped them.
