WICHITA, Kan. (WIBW/KWCH) -- A 49-year-old man is dead after an officer-involved shooting early Monday morning in Wichita.

According to the Wichita Police Dept., officers responded to a report of shots fired around 1:20 a.m. in the 1900 block of S. Glenn Ave., in southwest Wichita. Investigators say a man was shooting outside his home. He would repeatedly go into his home and come back out while firing, they explained, before running out and heading south, toward an officer.

Ignoring officers orders the man reportedly ran north on Glenn Ave. and they caught up with him near the Dora St. intersection. The Wichita Police Dept. say he pointed a gun at the officers and they told him to put down the gun.

Shortly before 2 a.m., the officers and Sedgwick Co. Sheriff’s Office deputies fired at him, the police dept. says; he died at the scene. Two homes were hit with gunfire, but no one else was hurt, they added.

Wichita police have not identified the man, but did note they have had prior contact with him and were looking into his background.

The Sedgwick Co. Sheriff’s Office has joined the investigation into the shooting.
