MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) -- The Manhattan Fire Department held a live fire demonstration Thursday to show the importance of home fire sprinklers.
The live fire demo displayed two similarly furnished rooms---one protected with a fire sprinkler and the other without.
Manhattan fire fighter Jacob Powell said demos like this are important to educate the community.
“Research has shown that the fire loss is reduced approximately 70% with having a home fire sprinkler system. The quick extinguisher reduces the smoke damage throughout the house and reduces the spread of the fire,” said Powell.
The room without the sprinkler system burned completely in just two minutes and was a total loss.
While the room with a sprinkler system was quickly extinguished.
The fire department received a $1,000 stipend from the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition (HFSC) to put on this educational event.
