TOPEKA (WIBW)--- A few days before Veterans Day, a local organization is saying thank-you to service members with a little R&R.
The group "Fur Feathers Friends" hosted a fellowship and dog games for past and present military veterans at Ravenwood Lodge.
They spent time outdoors showing off the talents of their bird dogs, from flushing out pheasants to proper hunting techniques, then, the hunters and veterans enjoyed dinner.
The event started off years ago with 12 participants, now it has grown to 100.
"If you're a bird hunter you know it's all about the dogs! If you're not a bird hunter and you see them work then you understand why we're so excited about watching the dogs work," Fur Feathers and Friends member Scott Linden said. "It's really magical and it brings us all together in a way that you don't get from watching a football game or working on a car."
Former college basketball coach Bobby Knight attended. He said he enjoys visiting veterans, and was invited by his friends, the Lewis Family. Lewis Toyota and the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism fund much of the cost for the event.
