TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - High School students got an inside take on politics Monday from a Kansas congressman.

Rep. Steve Watkins (R-KS) stopped by Seaman High School's AP Government class. He talked to students about his job and answered questions.

Watkins also congratulated the glass on their recent 3rd place finish in the 'We the People' competition, where students hold a mock congressional hearing on a government issue.

He also offered the students advice.

"Make the most of this critical time in their life. Feel gratitude throughout the day and know someday they're gonna be faced with a challenge and I'd encourage them to work everyday now so they can rise up and master that when it arrives," he said.

Watkins says his mom used to teach in the Seaman School District.
