Living the Dream awards 10 scholarships at 33rd annual banquet

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Hundreds gathered to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. in Topeka Saturday night.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship and Awards Banquet, sponsored by Living the Dream Topeka, was held at the Downtown Ramada Inn and Convention Center.

Ten students recieved scholarships and two others were recognized for their community service inspired by the civil rights activist.

"We are trying to carry on Dr. King's legacy through the community and we want people to continue to do that,"said Living the Dream Treasurer, Monica Augusto. "We wanted all people of all lives, nationalities, races and religions to come together and work to be as one and honor great people who have done great things through the city and their communities."

This was the 33rd year of the event.

Martin Luther King Jr. day is Monday, January 15.
