TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A local apartment company is helping raise money to defeat childhood cancer.

IRET, the company that owns several Topeka apartment complexes, such as Crown Colony and Villa West, sponsored Alex's Lemonade Stand Friday at Westboro Market. It was in memory of Rachel Howland, who passed away last year, weeks shy of her 8th birthday.

Money for lemonade and cookies donated by Josey's Baking, will go to fund research and support families.

"This is in memory of my daughter Rachel Howland and she passed away last February of neuroblastoma cancer and she had fought for almost three years and she never gave up hope," said Mindy Howland of IRT Properties. "Alex's Lemonade Stand helped us in so many ways, with our travel and finances as far as hotel stays, Ubers from the airport. They were true."

Alex's Lemonade stand has funded nearly $1,000 research grants since 2005.
