Lawrence Police: Heat apparent factor in death of 2-year-old found in car

LAWRENCE, Kan. (WIBW) -- Lawrence Police identified two-year-old Devonte Turner as the child found dead inside a car Sunday evening.

LPD Chief Gregory Burns said police received a call around 5:30 p.m. Sunday about a child left alone in a vehicle at the Easy Living Mobile Home Park, in the 3300 block of Iowa St.

Burns said the child had passed away by the time officers and paramedics arrived.

"It appears as though heat may have been a contributing factor," Burns said, while adding the exact cause of death still has not been determined.

Burns said the child's parents had left him in the care of other family members at the time of the death. He declined to say their relationship to Devonte, or at whose residence the vehicle was parked.

"As those involved attempt to heal from this loss, our thoughts are with everyone who has been affected by this event," Burns said. "Any time we lose a citizen of our city, it's very tragic. This tragedy is only compounded when it involves a child."

Burns declined to release any other details of the investigation so far. He stressed that while specific circumstances still are not known, it does bring a lesson.

"This serves as a reminder - please take extra care exiting your vehicles, especially this time of year when temperatures are high," he said.
