Lakers waive former Kansas guard Malik Newman

(WIBW) - The Los Angeles Lakers announced they waived former Kansas guard Malik Newman on Thursday night.

Newman played in five Summer League games for the team, averaging 3.2 points per game in 9.8 minutes. He had signed a two-way contract with Los Angeles on July 1 after going undrafted in the 2018 NBA Draft.

The 2017-2018 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year finished his Kansas career on a postseason high. He led KU in NCAA Tournament scoring during its Final Four run at 21.6 points per game, winning the Midwest Regional's Most Outstanding Player award.

Before March Madness started, he starred for the Jayhawks in their Big 12 Tournament title run. Newman won the tournament's MVP honors after averaging 24 points per game. For the whole season, he averaged 14.2 points per game while shooting 46.3 percent.

The Mississippi native had to sit out the 2016-2017 season after transferring to Kansas from Mississippi State. As a high school prospect, Newman was one of the most highly touted players in the country for the class of 2015.
