Kobach's top deputy Eric Rucker to fill Schmidt's senate seat

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Republican Insurance Commissioner-elect Vicki Schmidt officially resigned from her senate seat in November.

Thursday night Kansans voted to determine who would fill her shoes.

170 people spoke up at the Wanamaker Woods Nazarene Church - selecting the person who will hold her senate seat untill the 2020 elections.

Kris Kobach's top deputy Eric Rucker beat out former state Representative Joe Patton in the election.

Rucker currently serves as the assistant secretary of state.

Vicki Schmidt says she's excited about her role as insurance commissioner - but leaving the senate is bittersweet.

"Oh it is, it really is. Fourteen years I’ve been a senator, I love the people of this district, it's been an honor and a privilege to serve them, and now I’m going to go on to a new chapter, but it is a little bittersweet."

Rucker's nomination now goes to Governor Jeff Colyer who will make the appointment official.
