Kansas SBDC honors outstanding small businesses

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Several of the state's outstanding small businesses earned honors during a Statehouse ceremony Tuesday afternoon.

The Kansas SBDC (small business development centers) handed out its annual awards.

The SBDCs are housed at colleges and universities around the state. They offer assistance to help existing and aspiring businesses reach their goals. SBDC staff can share expertise on areas from finances to marketing.

The Emporia State University SBDC recognized Floyd's Inc, an automotive repair business; and Ellen Plumb's City Bookstore.

Ellen Plumb's owner Marcia Lawrence says she never would have had the knowledge to make decisions to move forward without the SBDC's guidance.

"This (award) is such a validation that I'm actually doing the right thing. I must be doing something right or they wouldn't recognize what I have accomplished thus far," she said.

Washburn University's SBDC chose The Winged Lion, a home decor store in Manhattan; and Norsemen Brewing Company in Topeka.

Norsemen co-owner Jared Rudy said he and his partners didn't have extensive business backgrounds, so the SBDC's assistance was invaluable.

"You know, we put a lot of sweat, blood and tears into this business and bring something really cool to Topeka and Topeka has done really good at supporting us," he said.
