TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A person in a vehicle hit by a driver fleeing authorities Thursday afternoon was killed, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

KHP says, around 12:15 p.m., a trooper spotted a black Acura that matched the description of a vehicle involved in a forgery case reported to Topeka Police.

The trooper followed the suspect south on Gage Blvd. and, when he turned west onto Holly Lane, tried to pull him over. Instead of stopping, KHP says the driver suddenly sped up, ran the stop sign at McAlister - two blocks away, and collided with a Ford Explorer driving south on McAlister.

The Explorer's driver, as well as the driver and passenger in the Acura, were taken to the hospital. The Explorer's driver later passed away.

KHP says the driver of the Acura will be booked into jail once he is released from the hospital. They say exact charges will be determined pending the outcome of the investigation.

Names of the people involved will not be released until next of kin is notified, KHP said.
