WASHINGTON, D.C. (WIBW)-- Kansas Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins will tour the detention center at Guantanamo Bay along with local and state officials.

Jenkins told 13 NEWS:

“Since I was elected to Congress, I have been working to stop President Obama’s proposed plan to close the detention center at Guantanamo Bay and possibly transfer dangerous terrorists to the United States Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth. President Obama may have finally abandoned the notion of using an executive order to close the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, but we need to ensure that his and future Administrations don’t begin to reconsider it.”

“This trip, my second, will help provide our local and state officials and community leaders with the resources they need to better understand why GTMO is the best and only place for these dangerous terrorists. I will continue to work with my colleagues to ensure the President’s flawed campaign promise never becomes a reality.”

Officials said that Jenkins will also host Kansas State Senator Steve Fitzgerald, Kansas State Representatives Tony Barton and Willie Dove along with Larry Dedeke, Mayor, City of Leavenworth, Mark Preisinger, Leavenworth County Commissioner and Todd Thompson, Leavenworth County Attorney during the Guantanamo tour.
