January is Blood Donor Month; Red Cross issues critical need for blood donations
The Red Cross is asking for donations during National Blood Donor Month.
January has been observed as National Blood Donor month for 50 years with the goal of increasing blood and platelet donations during winter.
Winter is one of the most difficult times of year to collect blood products because inclement weather can result in cancelled blood drives, and seasonal illnesses like the flu can temporarily make people unable to donate.
The American Red Cross states that they are in need of all blood types, but especially type O. Platelet donations are also needed.
Those who give blood from January 1-19 will automatically be entered for a chance to win a trip for two to Super Bowl LIV.
To schedule a blood or platelet donation appointment, use the Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
