Hit and run suspect crashes vehicle in east Topeka

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A hit and run suspect fled a crash scene Monday evening, then fled police and crashed his own vehicle, according to Topeka Police.

The initial wreck happened around 6:30 p.m. A car hit a motorcycle at SW 29th and Burlingame, then fled.

Topeka Police Lt. Steve Roth told 13 NEWS a citizen followed the car and relayed its location to police. Roth said the driver initially pulled over for officers, but then took off. He said officers followed, and the car crashed moments later into a tree at SE 10th and Indiana, at Samuel Jackson Park.

Several children were playing in the park at the time, but none of them was hurt.

Roth said the motorcycle driver and the car's driver were both taken to the hospital with injuries. Both are expected to recover.

Drivers are being asked to avoid both the areas of SE 10th and Indiana, and SW 29th and Burlingame while authorities investigate.

This is a developing story. 13 NEWS will provide updated information as it becomes available.
