High schoolers explore energy careers at Electrify Your Future

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Local high schoolers have a new understanding of careers in energy after getting a behind-the-scenes look at Westar today.

Students from Topeka Public Schools learned about career opportunities at today's Electrify Your Future event.

They got to hear from a variety of professionals currently at the company in fields ranging from human resources, to accounting, to engineering, to customer service.

The day included tours of the building and learning about what different opportunities are available for them in the electric utility industry.

"Hopefully they're seeing a little bit of themselves in people, especially when they hear a lot of local folks that came from Topeka Public Schools, went to Washburn or other local area colleges,” Alex Savoy, property accountant at Westar, said. “So hopefully they're seeing something like 'Hey, I can do that too and achieve the same thing, or more."

Over the next decade, half of Westar's current employees will be eligible for retirement.
