High school student killed in officer-involved shooting in Overland Park


OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (KWCH) -- A high school student has died after an officer-involved shooting in Overland Park.

Police got the call on Saturday night about a person in distress who was threatening to harm himself. It was in the area of 149th Terrace and England Street in Overland Park.

When officers arrived, a car pulled out of the garage. The driver then rushed the officers.

One of them opened fire, killing the driver.

School officials confirmed to KCTV5 News, that the person killed was 17-year-old John Albers, a student at Blue Valley Northwest.

The Johnson County Officer Involved Shooting Investigation Team will be conducting the investigation.

Overland Park police say the officer was uninjured and placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
