The City of Hiawatha is looking for their next permanent fire chief.

City Manager Mike Nichols told 13 NEWS the Hiawatha City Commission terminated Chief Ryan Shockley Monday night on a 4-0 vote.

Nichols says the decision came after three executive sessions regarding non-elected personnel during Monday's meeting.

1st Assistant Fire Chief Gene Atland will assume the chief's duties during the interim.

No word on what lead to Shockley's dismissal. He had been chief since May of 2018.

Nichols said Hiawatha's Fire Department is a volunteer fire department. The next chief will come from recommendations by current department members before going before the commission for final approval.
