The National Council for Home Safety and Security (NCHSS) released its annual report on the safest cities in each U.S. state. The Safest Cities Report examines each city's per-capita crime data to provide state rankings and also features cities that have improved or maintained a safe environment for their residents.
According to the report, Kansas saw a 9.7 percent increase in violent crime since last year, the second-highest increase in the country.
McPherson ranked first on the list with a violent crime rate of 1.74 per 1,000, which is well below half of the statewide rate.
Topeka ranked last, with 7,326 total crimes last year and 6.06 violent crimes per 1,000.
