Hearing postponed Wed for 1 of 2 teens charged in Lawrence shootings

LAWRENCE, Kan. (WIBW) -- One of two juveniles charged with the attempted murders of two male teens in a Lawrence park will appear in Douglas County District Court in mid-June after his appearance scheduled for Wednesday was postponed.

Benson Jerome Edwards Jr., 17, of Topeka, will appear in the juvenile division of Douglas County District Court on June 19.

Edwards is charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated robbery, and one count of felony possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, a court complaint said. The Wednesday hearing was to have been a status conference.

Co-defendant Sahavione K. Caraway, 17, who is charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated robbery, is to appear in juvenile court on May 22, according to court records.

The two victims were wounded in Holcom Park in southwest Lawrence about 4 p.m. on March 29, Lawrence police said a day after the shootings.

At that time, police said the 18-year-old victim was in critical but stable condition, and the 16-year-old victim was in stable condition.

The victims were shot outside the Holcom Park Recreation Center, Lawrence police said.

The victims were robbed of vaping cartridges and a phone, the complaint said, and the robbers were armed with pistols.

Witnesses gave police descriptions of the possible suspect vehicle, the vehicle was located and stopped, and two people in the vehicle were questioned, the police statement said.
