Grass fire in Elk County now under control

ELK CO, Kan. (KWCH) -- The Elk County Sheriff says a massive wildfire is now under control, but crews are still on the scene working to keep it that way.

Firefighters have been working against several challenges as they battle this grass fire. So far, that fire has burned through several thousand acres.

Crews are battling high winds and dry conditions, which helped the fire spread so quickly.

At this point, there are no reports of injuries or homes burned by the fire, though there have been evacuations in that area. A shelter was set up at the Elk Valley School.
