Granny Basketball lands in Topeka

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-- A different kind of basketball tournament will bounce into Topeka this weekend. The Kansas Senior Games will welcome Granny Basketball to this year's lineup.

Granny Basketball supports women of a "certain age"--50 years or older. Being an actual grandmother is not required. The game is modeled after 1920's style basketball, but players say that's what makes the game exciting.

"You can't run, jump or slam dunk. But you can hurry," player Dee Bisel said.

And the famous granny shot is the "slam dunk" of the game. Players get three extra points if they make the basket.

Granny Basketball is a game with a twist of nostalgia, and it fun for everyone, on the court--and in the stands.

"You have to come out and see it for yourself," player Michele Clark said.

Granny Basketball begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, September 15 at Sports Zone located on 3907 SW Burlingame Rd.

Admission to the games are free.
