Additional mail ballots made a sales tax vote in Brown County even closer.

The "no" votes lead by two on a question for a half-cent sales tax to support Hiawatha Community Hospital. The current tally is 1268 yes, to 1270 no.

Last Tuesday's election night ended with a three-vote gap.

Brown Co. Clerk Melissa Gormley told Many Signals Communications the new total reflects seven additional mail ballots. State law allows advanced ballots returned by mail to be counted so long as they are post-marked by election day.

MSC reports Brown Co. has 40 provisional ballots to consider when commissioners meet for their canvass next week Monday, Nov. 18.

A similar sales tax proposal was defeated by 29 votes during a special election in May.
