Free sailing puts folks on the waters of Lake Shawnee

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Shawnee Yacht Club offered free sailboat rides to celebrate the unofficial start of the summer season.

The group offered the rides from noon to 4 p.m. Monday at Lake Shawnee. They wanted people to experience sailing, and give them an inside look at the sailboat racing season coming up in June.

Given the Memorial Day holiday, organizers said people should remember simple liberties like fun on the water are made possible by the sacrifices of the men and women who died for our country.

"It fills my heart knowing that we can enjoy the peace and quality of life that we currently have and that we stand on the shoulders of the men and women who came before us," club member TJ Ciaffone said.

The Shawnee Yacht Club will also host free sailing classes every Wednesday, June through August.
