JACKSON CO., Kan. (WIBW) A former Jackson County EMT who admitted to stealing drugs from his employer will not be going to jail for the crimes.

U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister said Colby VanWagoner, 33, of Mayetta was sentenced to five years probation on Tuesday.

VanWagoner also cannot work anywhere that would give him access to controlled substances without prior approval from his probation officer.

He pleaded guilty to one count of obtaining a controlled substance by deception and one count of making a false statement back in December.

McAllister says VanWagoner stole morphine from the Jackson County Emergency Medical Service while he was an EMT for the agency.

VanWagoner must also complete a substance abuse program.
